Ecology & Conservation of Bengal Slow Loris

The underwater coral study carried out by Isabela Foundation as part of the project entitled “Natural Resource Survey and other Related Activities Under Ecosystem Based Development, Management, and Conservation of the Saint Martin’s Island” implemented by the Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bangladesh and funded by the UNDP. Under the natural resource survey, Isabela Foundation conducted the underwater coral survey to assess the status and diversity of coral species and associated flora and fauna of Saint Martin’s Island ECA area.
The aim of the project was to investigate upon the existing condition of available biodiversity in the Island in order to formulate necessary conservation actions, and consequently develop a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the Saint Martin’s Island (SMI).
IWM assigned Isabela foundation the task of Baseline Ecological Survey and Investigation of Karnaphuli River Basin (with Halda River) under the project entitled “Feasibility Study for Restoration of Karnaphuli River Basin (with Halda River).
These River systems are producer of ecological water and the vast natural renewable resources including zoo plankton phytoplankton, algae, macro benthos, hundreds of species of aquatic Coelenterate, Porifera, Nematodes, Helminthes, Mollusks, Crustaceans, Arthropods, Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Aves and Mammals. Chattagram Hill Tracts and Coast is one of the Hotspots of Bangladesh Delta Plan (BDP), 2100. As the river Karnaphuli flow through this Hotspot, the contribution of this study project may be considered significantly to achieve the goal of Delta Plan. Under this circumstance, a comprehensive study is required on Karnaphuli river basin including Halda River and Kaptai dam to identify the interventions to make this basin more active.
The overall objective of the study is to early out a holistic and integrated study for development of Karnaphuli river basin improvement plan considering technical, environmental, social and economic aspects.
The Chattogram region is characterized by a huge network of trellis and dendritic drainage consisting of some major rivers draining into the Bay of Bengal. IWM assigned Isabela foundation the task of carrying out the ecological survey of the Sangu and Matamuhuri River basin under the project entitled Feasibility Study for restoration of Sangu and Matamuhuri River Basin During 2019 and 2020.
The objective of the study is to establish Ecological Baseline Information of the basin, identification of Valued Environment Components, and Assessment of impacts and mitigation plan to prepare a Biodiversity Enhancement, Conservation and Monitoring Plan for the river basin.
